Interpretive Map of the Royal Capital

Book Three of A Wonderful Week for a Quest, featuring the royal palace crisis

Interpretive Map of the Royal Capital

Not to scale · not a canonical street plan · based on documented civic functions

A Responsible Reconstruction

The chronicles establish a palace, throne room, ballroom, royal library, council activity, court music, guards, public approaches, markets, homes, offices, gates, and roads into the wider kingdom. They do not preserve a complete map. This diagram arranges those documented functions into a readable capital without claiming that every building stood in precisely this location.

Documented Elements Used in the Reconstruction

  • The royal palace as the civic and ceremonial center
  • A throne room and formal court
  • A ballroom used for diplomacy and major gatherings
  • Royal council activity and administrative offices
  • The royal library and preservation of historical knowledge
  • Palace music, Zomart’s organ, and performance culture
  • Guards and later King’s Watch inspection teams
  • Markets, inns, homes, kitchens, stables, and workshops
  • Public approaches large enough for crowds and emergencies
  • Roads leading toward the Arid Zone, coasts, farms, and southern regions

Interpretive Choices

The palace has been placed at the northern end of the main processional road so that public ceremonies can move through the square toward the gates. The royal library and King’s Watch checkpoint sit near the palace because both institutions interact closely with the Crown. The market, residential, administrative, and performance districts are arranged around the main crossroads to show how royal and ordinary life overlap.

None of these placements should be treated as a newly discovered canonical address. They are a visual reading of the functions described across the books and encyclopedia records.

The Capital in Different Eras

  • Age of Heroes: A living palace, active court, public gatherings, and ordinary urban commerce.
  • Final Quest: The palace becomes abandoned, dangerous, and connected to a missing DEM gear.
  • Refried Era: The capital inherits royal government, the Charter, the King’s Watch, clockwork institutions, and memorial culture.
  • Sunken Era: The magical capital disappears beneath the modern world with the rest of the Beandom.

Chronicler’s note: Cartographers prefer streets that remain where they were drawn. The Beandom prefers eruptions, magical barriers, palace sieges, and several centuries of inconvenient urban renewal.
