The quest

Johann and Brigitta leave the Canticle Kingdom to explore, only to discover that the roads between worlds have restrictions of their own. Turned away from one route through the Middlespace, they arrive in Germany in 1948. Their adventure becomes a search involving Karsten Müller, his missing brother Jorgen, and the stolen music box that holds their home.

Being away from the box is dangerous. The kingdom’s people draw life from its magic, and Brigitta begins turning back to stone. Molly, the former queen now living on Earth as a girl again, helps restore her, but the relief cannot last unless they recover the box.

Meanwhile, Richard and Bruno are caught up in the crisis of a mountain imprisoned inside the Frozen Globe. Its inhabitants include Witter, the powerful Lillis, and the ambitious priest Silber. The mountain’s musical magic offers hope of escape, but the Many-Named One intends to use it for his own ends.

How it ends

The Many-Named One takes Silber as a host after gathering evil from other people to increase his strength. In the musical tower, Nachtigal and Will sacrifice their living forms to power the organ and help their companions. Lillis is restored from her silver imprisonment and fights back while Hart plays the terrible music demanded of him. The globe’s prison is shattered.

The struggle converges in the Middlespace. Richard carries a staff supplied by Axertes, a being from the Centerspace. Johann, Brigitta, Bruno, and Richard combine their remaining strength through it. The attack tears the collected evil from the Many-Named One, weakening him, but does not finish him. Axertes pursues him as the compromised transit system begins shutting down.

Brigitta chooses to save the music box and its people, losing her chance to stay with Johann. She and Molly land in Berlin, where Jorgen rescues them from a lion enclosure. He confirms that the box has lost its life’s spark. The reunited Müller brothers promise to help her find Johann and restore the kingdom.

Johann reaches Burgenring with Bruno, Witter, and Lillis. Believing Richard dead, he buries his grandfather. The epilogue reveals what Johann does not know: Richard has been granted a new existence as a citizen of the Centerspace.

The final quest

Johann and his companions seek a way home through Burgenring, while Brigitta and her allies try to revive the Canticle Kingdom and reunite its scattered people. The Many-Named One escapes toward Darkespace and returns with new sources of evil. Even the Middlespace routes become corrupted.

Johann’s pilgrimage brings him through dangerous religious authority and eventually to Telegro’s floating Sanctuary. Telegro can perceive the thoughts and feelings of the people below, but his title does not make him all-powerful. The missing Mountain of Ayr has left a breach in Burgenring’s defenses, and dark waters are pouring through it. He believes Johann and his companions can help, though he cannot simply solve the crisis for them.

Music becomes central to the answer. The Musicanters, including Howa, offer a tradition of cooperation and power over nature. On the other side of the search, Lorelei’s gifts help open routes between worlds. The separate journeys move toward a rescue larger than returning a few travelers home: the kingdom itself must be brought out of the box.

How it ends

The Canticle Kingdom is transferred into Burgenring. Johann uses his growing power over nature to help close the breach in the mountains, then joins the fight against the Many-Named One’s shard-built forces. Heating and fusing the enemy’s fragments makes them vulnerable in a way that simply shattering them does not.

When the transferred kingdom becomes complete, its old song of banishment takes effect again. The Many-Named One and his remaining darkness are drawn into the emptied music box, which becomes his prison.

The victory costs lives. Wilhelm, Siegfried, and Peter enter a transformed existence alongside Richard, serving the Centerspace. They restore the damaged kingdom before departing. Wilhelm also restores Johann’s lost memories of Brigitta, giving the reunited pair back their shared past.

The kingdom now belongs to its new world and no longer needs to bring in queens to sustain its life. The Edisons choose to return to Earth. Brigitta accepts the crown on the condition that Johann becomes her king.

In the coda, Molly accepts responsibility for guarding the sealed music box, with Rufus available to help. Years later, Johann gives Telegro’s promised journey to Bruno, allowing his captain of the guard to seek an adventure of his own.

Where we leave everyone

  • Johann and Brigitta: rule their restored kingdom together.
  • The Canticle Kingdom: is part of Burgenring, free of its old dependence on the box.
  • The Many-Named One: is imprisoned in the sealed box under Molly’s protection.
  • The elder knights: continue serving in a new form.
  • Bruno: receives the opportunity to explore another world.

Before the main story

The prequel traces the choices that turn a craftsman’s masterpiece into a living kingdom—and leave that kingdom in danger before Johann’s adventure begins. Jorgen Müller’s connection to the enchanter Edelphus draws him toward magical music, imitation, and control. His grief for Klara and his unwillingness to let her go help make him vulnerable to the enchanter’s influence.

An early scheme involving a copy of Karsten and an enchanted jewelry box causes Minna to disappear. Though she later returns, the experience leaves lasting damage. Jorgen recognizes that he has been manipulated, but his effort to confront the enchanter ends with him allowing the being inside himself.

Years later, Jorgen and Karsten build their great music box together. Its carved palace, village, and forest are more than decoration. Jorgen discovers that the magic can create a world, not merely imprison part of an existing one. He secretly plays the box outside Minna’s window. She vanishes from Earth as the kingdom gains its spark of life.

Jorgen then fashions a copy of Klara and enters the kingdom with her. They present themselves at Queen Minna’s court as visitors from Germania, seeking a new life. The apparently beautiful refuge carries the darkness of its maker into its own history.

How it ends

The final struggle centers on saving Siegfried’s infant daughter, Brigitta, from the palace. Karsten escapes with her despite burns from the pursuing fox soldiers. Brutus shelters the child in a hidden room at his blacksmith’s shop, honoring the arrangement he has made with Siegfried.

Cornelius follows Karsten to Siegfried’s cottage. Karsten realizes that the fox fur around Cornelius’s neck is connected to his command of the attackers. With Siegfried providing magical cover, Karsten tears away the wrap and throws it into the fire. The stone fox soldiers explode, but Cornelius escapes with Peter, who has been transformed from a man rather than made from stone.

Karsten recognizes Cornelius as another version of his brother Jorgen. With the defenders weakened, he returns to Earth intending to seek help and hide the box. Siegfried remains behind, concealing how badly his memory has been damaged. Knowing his daughter is safe gives him a reason to hope.

Where we leave everyone

  • Brigitta: is an infant hidden in Brutus’s care.
  • Siegfried: survives, but with diminished strength and fragmented memories.
  • Karsten: returns to Earth, aware that time between the worlds is unreliable.
  • Cornelius and Peter: escape the destruction of the fox soldiers.
