Soul Cleavers
Bind · Separate · Ascend · Reshape the Aspects
The Meaning of “Cleave”
The name Soul Cleaver is deliberately double-edged. The ancient term can mean to split apart or to bind together, and the artifact can do both. Used correctly, the blade can separate Aspects that have been joined—or force separated Aspects into a new union.
Ascension Shrines
The Mind of Rahim reveals that an Ascension shrine lies hidden near every Keep. Each shrine contains a Soul Cleaver and can be found only by a vessel or one of Rahim’s Favored. The blades are therefore distributed across the Realm but concealed behind spiritual as well as physical barriers.
The Divine Keep
The Cleavers are ultimately designed for use in Rahim’s Divine Keep, where the lunar structures corresponding to the Aspects can be manipulated. In The Thirst, the Purple Aspect attempts to use one to merge moons and their associated Aspects, making the artifact central to the conflict over forced recombination.
A Tool, Not a Moral Answer
A Soul Cleaver does not decide whether division or unity is right. It only makes either possible. That neutrality reflects one of the series’ larger ideas: power cannot substitute for wisdom. The same blade can repair an ancient wrong or create a new one depending on the will behind it.
