Mage Beasts

Mounts · Communicators · Servants of Rahim

More Than Mounts

Mage Beasts are among the fastest means of travel in the Realm, but treating them as ordinary riding animals misses most of what makes them remarkable. They are highly intelligent creatures capable of forming emotional and mental bonds with human riders.

Communication by Impression

Mage Beasts do not use spoken language. Instead, they exchange impressions, emotions, sensory images, and intentions. With practice, a rider can learn to distinguish surprisingly subtle meaning. Evelet is especially attuned to them, and the beasts recognize her connection to Rahim.

Appearance and Senses

Their bodies combine tough skin, patches of thick fur, bony ridges along the neck and spine, and a long plated tail ending in a spike. Their fur carries a distinctive spicy scent. They are perceptive enough to warn riders about threats that human senses miss.

The Cost of Bonding

Because the mental connection is genuine, a Mage Beast’s pain and fear can wash directly into its rider. The Wraith attack in The Hunger makes that bond tragic: Azil experiences the terror of a dying beast and learns that magical creatures are not disposable tools but thinking allies.
