Mage Bears

Among the Largest Mage Creatures
Mage Bears are renowned for both extraordinary strength and intelligence. Their size and natural power make them dangerous wilderness creatures, but the novels increasingly reveal them as reasoning beings with memory, judgment, and loyalty.
The Scent Wraiths Fear
A Mage Bear secretes a powerful odor onto its fur, repelling other animals. Mage Wraiths fear the scent in particular. Sarhah turns that natural defense into alchemy, using Mage Bear glands in preparations that help conceal travelers from Wraith packs.
Termat
Termat becomes the cycle’s most important named Mage Bear. He is not merely Sarhah’s protection but a companion and voice of reason, capable of conversation, humor, caution, and independent judgment. His relationship with Sarhah is one of the clearest examples of the series treating mage creatures as persons rather than monsters.
Children of Semprel
The Longing reveals that Mage Bears hold an unusually direct relationship with Semprel. The Sage Bear explains that while Rahim created most races, Semprel created the Mage Bears herself. Rather than filling their veins with ordinary mortal blood, she gave them Dawn Potation, granting extraordinary strength and an ancient bond to her service.
Betrayal & Withdrawal
The bears once served Rahim and protected his servants, but human persecution nearly drove them to extinction. In response they withdrew into hidden caves and refused the summons that later drew lesser Mage Creatures toward the Dark Vessel. Their isolation is therefore not simple savagery or indifference, but the result of a long memory of betrayal.
The Sage Bear & Return to Service
Termat’s father, the ancient Sage Bear, preserves knowledge of the older order and recognizes Rahim’s mark on Sarhah even decades after she ceased being a vessel. Through Semprel’s intervention, the bears accept that hiding has also become a failure of duty. Their restored Dawn Potation and return to service transform them into a major force against the Dark Vessel.
A Link to the Older World
Mage Bears carry instincts and memories that seem better suited to an earlier world than the fractured Penultimate Age. Their survival provides another clue that the magical ecology of the Realm preserves relationships and patterns human societies have forgotten.
