CRAFT WITHOUT ESSENCE

Alchemancy

A practical chemical craft that imitates many magical effects without drawing on Essence.

Not Ordinary Magic

Alchemancy uses prepared substances, reactive powders, blades, pouches, and learned combinations to produce effects that can resemble spellcraft. The crucial distinction is that the craft does not require Essence or a magical Reserve.

Sarhah’s Specialty

Sarhah Harkness develops unusual skill in Alchemancy during her years of isolation. Her belt of materials and paired knives let her create smoke, fire, flashes, adhesives, decoys, and other effects through chemistry and preparation rather than direct magical power.

Working Beside Magic

Alchemancy and spellcraft can be used together. Sarhah repeatedly combines practical compounds with the abilities of companions or Aspects, allowing one method to cover the weaknesses of the other.

Where Magic Fails

The craft becomes especially valuable in places designed to punish spellcasting. Magical wards, depleted Reserves, and Essence-sapping technology cannot automatically disable chemistry. In The Longing, Sarhah explicitly relies on the fact that her blades and compounds are craft, not magic.

Knowledge as Power

Alchemancy reinforces one of the cycle’s recurring ideas: supernatural power is not the only kind of power that matters. Study, preparation, invention, and an understanding of ordinary materials can sometimes succeed precisely because an enemy is prepared only to fight mages.
