Aaron

Guide, Knight & Wild Card

  • Full name: Aaron Witz
  • Relationship to Rich: seventh great-uncle on his father’s side
  • Condition: dead for centuries, appearing physically as he did at death
  • Assignment: guide Rich through his Paladin probation
  • Personality: playful, knowledgeable, secretive, and occasionally infuriating

The Least Conventional Chaperone Possible

Minerva assigns Aaron to accompany Rich wherever he goes—even school. Although he looks like another boy, Aaron is hundreds of years old and carries firsthand knowledge of knights, Nemeses, quests, and the rules Rich has suddenly inherited.

A Guide Who Does Not Tell Everything

Aaron can explain the game, but he is not always quick to reveal its worst rules. His delayed explanation of the deadly one-week danger illustrates both his usefulness and his biggest flaw: he sometimes decides what Rich is ready to hear instead of letting Rich decide for himself.

Mentor and Family

Because Aaron is both guide and relative, his relationship with Rich is more complicated than a standard mentor bond. He can teach Rich strategy and history, but his absences and secrets repeatedly force Rich to act without constant supervision.

Deep Canon · Later-Series Spoilers

Aaron continues to fight beside Rich after the first quest and eventually takes his place as a living chess piece in battles where defeat can carry consequences far beyond an ordinary game.
