A world that must feed its magic

Life in the realm depends on Sustenance, which the body converts into magical Essence. Without it, people risk becoming Mals: transformed, feared, and pushed outside society. The great Clans control a world in which access to magic can determine who prospers and who is cast out.

Azil Harkness, a fashion-conscious scholar of the Scarlatti court, is drawn into a dangerous undertaking through his friend Jamith and the mysterious Evelet. At a Scarlatti ball, the young Kaval unleashes a catastrophic burst of magic. Azil and Evelet escape with him, beginning a journey that will expose how little the realm understands its own history.

The quest behind the quest

Azil’s sister Sarhah joins their struggle. She has been hiding the fact that she is a Mal, a condition inflicted on her by their father. As Kaval grows close to her, he must confront the prejudice he has carried toward people like her.

Evelet is a vessel for the Scarlet Aspect of Rahim. Rahim’s divided nature lies at the heart of the conflict: his three Aspects of Earth, or Light, and his three Aspects of Ether, or Dark, pursue different designs for the world. The quest for the Clans’ sacred gems is part of Evelet’s plan to free the other two Light Aspects.

In Azura, Sarhah risks her life to recover a page of The Mind of Rahim. When she is imprisoned, Azil returns to rescue her, badly disfiguring Sven in their confrontation. Meanwhile, Evelet takes Kaval to the Dorian Keep, where she wins the final gem in a game of trifecta. Kaval’s body is holding more magical energy than it can safely contain; using all three gems offers a way to release it.

The ending: freedom at a terrible cost

The ritual frees the Golden and Azure Aspects. Azil becomes the Golden Aspect’s vessel, while Kaval receives the Azure Aspect. But the Aspects also awaken the immense mage creature beneath the Dorian mountain. As the Mage Gigas, it destroys the great Clan strongholds and devastates the realm, ushering in the Penultimate Age.

Azil is horrified. Evelet defends the devastation as a necessary act of purification, but her explanation cannot erase what he has witnessed. Serving Rahim now means living with the consequences of a catastrophe they helped bring about.

The released Essence puts Sarhah’s life in danger. Kaval draws on the Azure Aspect to save her, healing her Mal condition as she commits herself to Rahim’s service. The recovered page restores the text of The Mind of Rahim, giving the companions a source of knowledge for their next task: separating Earthmen from Ethermen so the world can heal.

In the epilogue, Azil returns to the Twilight Library and finds Jamith’s journal. Writing left by the Purple Aspect suggests that his oldest friend has become a vessel for one of the opposing Aspects.

Where we leave everyone

  • Azil: vessel of the Golden Aspect, gifted in swiftness and determined to understand what has happened.
  • Kaval: vessel of the Azure Aspect; he has healed Sarhah, but his parentage and earlier history as a vessel remain unresolved.
  • Sarhah: healed of her Mal condition and committed to helping restore the world.
  • Evelet: vessel of the Scarlet Aspect, still guiding the mission despite Azil’s shaken trust.
  • Jamith: his journal points toward the Purple Aspect; Azil does not yet know the full truth of his fate.

After the Wrath

The destruction at the end of The Hunger is now known as the Wrath. The Clans have fallen, survivors struggle to rebuild, and Mals roam a broken realm. Azil studies The Mind of Rahim while he, Evelet, and Kaval carry the three Light Aspects. Their goal is to undo the binding of Earthmen and Ethermen.

Kaval’s condition begins to change. He suffers pain, speaks of the Thirst, and disappears. Azil’s search brings him back into conflict with Sven, now a leader of the surviving Remnant and a vessel of the Emerald Aspect. During the struggle, Kaval transfers the Azure Aspect to Sarhah. She escapes with its power, but Kaval remains a prisoner and becomes a Mal.

New allies, old betrayals

The opposing Aspects are working through people painfully familiar to Azil. Jamith carries the Purple Aspect, while Reshel, Azil and Sarhah’s father, carries the Orange Aspect. Evelet pursues a precarious alliance with Reshel in the search for the means to separate the two races. Sarhah joins that effort before returning to her brother’s side.

Bartan, a former vessel of the Purple Aspect, becomes an ally to Azil. Their research reveals that the coming binding involves Rahim’s Aspects and the moons themselves. The Soul Cleavers, accessible through hidden shrines, can bind or separate the Aspects in Rahim’s Divine Keep.

The danger grows on the ground as well. Mals are transformed into Revenants through the corrupting Dusk Potation. The Aspects of Ether plan to use a battle between the Revenants and the Remnant as the source of an enormous blood-magic spell. The deaths at the World Fissure will provide the power to unite all six Aspects in a single vessel.

What Sarhah finds beneath the Fissure

Azil and Sarhah descend into the World Fissure. Bartan sacrifices himself so Azil can recover The Mind of Rahim, preserving the information they need. At the bottom, the siblings reach the resting place of Rahim’s original body, guarded by his consort, Semprel.

Sarhah is admitted because of her desire to heal. Semprel gives her silver wings, a sword, and pure Sustenance. She charges Sarhah with gathering the refugees sheltering at the Mage Gigas and using their combined power to close the Fissure almost completely. Azil takes the wings and sword to confront the binding at the lunar keep, while Sarhah leads the effort below.

The ending: a victory that leaves the danger alive

Azil reaches the lunar keep and confronts the Purple Aspect in Jamith. He uses Semprel’s sword to interfere with the Soul Cleaver, weakening the binding without stopping it. Jamith briefly regains control of himself, and Azil brings him away. Kaval is there too: he is the intended vessel for the combined Aspects. Azil tries to rescue him, but cannot penetrate the protective energy around him.

Below, Sarhah and her allies succeed in narrowing the Fissure. Life-giving Dawn Potation surges out across the land, beginning its renewal and driving away the Revenants. Cutting off the spell’s energy prevents all six Aspects from merging. Instead, the three Light Aspects unite together, and the three Dark Aspects unite together. Kaval becomes the vessel of the combined Dark Aspects.

The Light Aspects offer their power to Azil or Sarhah. Sarhah proposes that they face the task together, with Evelet, rather than continuing to work apart. The Aspects accept the proposal and enter Azil.

Where we leave everyone

  • Azil: carries the united Light Aspects and sets out to seek help beyond the known realm.
  • Sarhah: has helped avert the full binding and insists that their struggle must be shared.
  • Jamith: survives and is himself again; he remains behind as Azil departs.
  • Kaval: is the vessel of the united Dark Aspects, making the coming conflict deeply personal.
  • Evelet: remains missing. Her mission has not freed Earthmen and Ethermen from their binding.

From the moons, Azil has seen other realms beyond the mountains. In the epilogue, he leaves to discover whether help can be found there, while the struggle with Rahim’s divided nature remains unresolved.
